Who knows who this person is,
The one who stares back at me?
That face in the mirror,
That voice that seems off-key?

«Is she me?»

This person seems so different,
Her whims and thoughts a blur.
She seems naive and silly,
Head spinning like a spur.

«Is she me?»

She seems vague and unfamiliar,
A distant part of my outer shell.
My heart wishes to destroy her,
Its pleas a desperate yell.

«Is she me?»

Is this person me,
Or a figment of my mind?
This mask is for the world to see,
The real me seems so blind.
I've really been thinking about "masks" and "shells" a lot lately. Do you act like yourself around the people you know, or do you put on an act? I'd be willing to bet a lot that you act a bit different around people than you would alone or with someone that you trust enough to let the act fall in their presence. How well do you actually know people if they turn into a different person in your presence, if they put on their mask?
